Manager

My name is Hazel and I was pleased to join Currie Playgroup as Manager in August 2021.

I passed my SNNEB and have worked in children and family centres for many years. When I had my own children I was a childminder, playgroup leader and then creche supervisor. I managed the Scottish Parliament creche, the first of its type in the world, for 14 years.

Over the years I have continued to study and develop my pedagogy skills over the years in different settings. I achieved My BA Childhood studies in 2014. I love to see children’s faces when they achieve something new on their own for the first time. I am passionate about children learning through real experiences outdoors.

Deputy Manager

We are pleased to announce our new Deputy Manager Carla will be starting with us after the Easter break.

Play Assistant

Hi I'm Gary. I've helped out at Currie Playgroup for around three or four years, and became a permanent staff member a couple of years ago. Previously I'd worked in various financial institutions around Edinburgh and I left to raise my daughter 8 years ago. I live in Currie with my wife and daughter. A keen autodidact, I spend my spare time reading the works of the great Philosophers, alongside studying the history of art. I'm also currently studying for a childcare qualification.

My attitude towards children can be summed up thus

"I believe the children are our are future

Teach them well and let them lead the way

Show them all the beauty they possess inside

Give them a sense of pride to make it easier

Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be"

Hi, my name is Fiona. I live in Fairmilehead with my husband and two teenage daughters. I joined Currie Playgroup in October 2018 as an Early Years Practitioner.

Prior to having my two girls my career was in Legal Conveyancing but when I was made redundant during the credit-crunch of 2009 I decided to leave that career behind and it was during my youngest daughter’s time at our local Community Playgroup that I became involved first as a parent committee member, then a volunteer and then a staff member. I absolutely loved being a part of Playgroup life and decided to go back to study and obtained my qualification in Early Learning Childcare and Development - Level 3. Without ever thinking that I would, I returned to Legal Conveyancing a couple of years ago and now split my working week between that and Playgroup. Whilst you could say the two job roles are miles apart there is striking similarities between negotiating with toddlers and Solicitors(!!) and I really enjoy the opportunity and balance between both jobs.

I have a keen and particular interest in Early Years education and find that age group fascinating as their characters and personalities develop. It is a privilege to be able to work with your little people and to watch them grow in confidence and independence at what is just the start of their educational journey.

Hi there I am Emily and I am originally from the Netherlands. I moved to Edinburgh from England in October 2019 and joined the Playgroup in October 2020 after being send there several times by my agency to fill in for absent staff. From the moment I came to the Playgroup I felt really at home and was welcomed by the children and the staff. As I live very local, I enjoy being part of the local community.

I have a NNEB Diploma and an Advanced Diploma in Childcare and Education and have worked in a variety of childcare settings. I especially love working with 2-5-year-old children as no two days are the same and I really enjoy seeing the children developing into happy, independent and confident children ready for their next step of education.

I love reading and the great outdoors and enjoy reading books to the children and showing them the natural world that is surrounding them. As I used to love playing outside when I was a child. I am also interested in History, Archaeology and horses.

I am currently studying for a Forest School Leader Diploma and am hoping to finish that in the Summer.
